Electronic Immigration Status Verification

SAVE is a fast, secure, and reliable online service that allows federal, state, and local benefit-granting agencies to verify a benefit applicant’s immigration status or naturalized/derived citizenship.

SAVE is administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a component of the Department of Homeland Security, and is dedicated to providing tailored training, support, and service to meet participating agency needs.

SAVE Additional Verification Response Time

The SAVE additional verification response time for January 2024 is now about 7 federal workdays. Response times vary depending upon the complexity of the case. Cases that require additional information or submission of a document may require additional time.  We will continue to provide updates as they become available.

To minimize the need for additional verification, follow these best practices when submitting a case:

  • Ensure that the applicant’s name, date of birth, and immigration enumerators are entered exactly as they appear on the applicant’s immigration documentation. Data entry errors often require additional manual verification to resolve.
  • Include all immigration enumerators provided by the applicant. For example, if the applicant presents a Form I-766, Employment Authorization Document, and a Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, enter both the USCIS number from the I-766 and the I 94 number into SAVE. Examples of immigration documents and the enumerators contained in them are available on the SAVE Commonly Used Immigration Documents webpage.
  • If an applicant needs their most recent Form I-94 issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), they can visit CBP’s I-94 website or download the CBP One mobile app to retrieve a copy.
