On May 22, 2012, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) launched the first phase of our new electronic immigration system, known as USCIS ELIS. This new system brings the agency closer to realizing the web-based future of immigration services.
Currently, USCIS ELIS is available for individuals who need to file a stand-alone Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status (Form I-539). Future releases will add form types and additional functions to the system, gradually expanding USCIS ELIS to cover all USCIS immigration benefits. USCIS invited interested parties to participate in an in person engagement to discuss USCIS ELIS and welcomed feedback from members of the academic community on their experience using and helping students to navigate the new system. This engagement took place on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:30 am at New York University’s Kimmel Center in the Rosenthal Room, which is located at 60 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012. During the event, USCIS representatives:
- Performed a demonstration of the USCIS ELIS system;
- Provided USCIS ELIS resources and materials for Designated School Officials (DSOs);
- Discussed USCIS ELIS best practices; and
- Sought feedback from DSOs regarding their experience with USCIS ELIS.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Student and Exchange Visitor Program (ICE SEVP) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was also present to answer any questions related to SEVIS or student immigration issues in general.
