TPS Extended for Somalia
On June 1, 2015, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the extension of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months effective Sept. 18, 2015 through March 17, 2017. The extension allows current TPS beneficiaries to re-register for TPS for Somalia and apply to renew their Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
Employers should look at the “Category” section on the EAD. Only “A-12” or “C-19” indicates the card was issued to a TPS beneficiary. A person, who is a TPS beneficiary and whose EAD expires on September 17, 2015, must obtain a new EAD on or before the expiration date to show continued work authorization. When the validity period of an employee’s expires, the employer must reverify using Section 3 of the Form I-9 to ensure that the employee is still authorized to work.
A receipt showing that the TPS beneficiary has applied to renew their EAD is not acceptable for Form I-9 purposes.
