Query:
Are Ethiopian citizens or Eritrean ethnicity who have undergone military training or national service in Eritrea presently at risk of mistreatment in Ethiopia?
Response:
According to an article in Agence France Presse, because of the recent hostilities between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the Ethiopian government has expelled approximately 750 Eritreans from Ethiopia who had military training in Eritrea. Ethiopia expelled the Eritreans with military service for national security reasons and for allegedly spying. Primarily men have been expelled, but there have been a few women. Before expelling them, the Eritreans have been picked up for questioning, but there have been no reports of any physical abuse by the Ethiopian authorities. On return to Ethiopia, those expelled have been well received by Eritrea. (Agence France Presse, 20 June 1998.)
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the RIC within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
