Become a Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card Holder) Through Refugee Status

If you were admitted to the United States as a refugee, you must apply for a Green Card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card) in the United States after one year of being in the United States as a refugee.
Eligibility
You are eligible to apply for lawful permanent resident (LPR) status if you:
- Have been physically present in the United States for at least one year after being admitted as a refugee;
- Are physically present in the U.S. when filing Form I-485;
- Have not had your refugee admission terminated; and
- Have not already received a Green Card.

How to File
You must:
- Read the instructions for Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status;
- Complete and sign your Form I-485; and
- Provide all required evidence and supporting documentation, including Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.
After You File
Once we receive your Form I-485, you will receive a:
- Receipt notice confirming we received your application;
- Biometric services notice, if applicable;
- Notice to appear for an interview, if required; and
- Notice of our decision.
